In a surprise announcement, The Hollywood Reporter reported the development of a movie starring Marvel Comics sci-fi character, Dreadstar.
Combining their superpowers, Benderspink and Illuminati Entertainment will be producing the Jim Starlin-created Dreadstar in his very own feature-length film adaptation.
In case you have no idea who Dreadstar is; he’s a blonde white guy with a goatee fighting the forces of evil in space.
And in case you are not familiar with Jim Starlin’s resume; he worked on Iron Man, Captain Marvel, co-created Thanos, Drax the Destroyer and Gamora.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Dreadstar told the adventures of Vanth Dreadstar, the last survivor of the Milky Way Galaxy who is torn between two powerful and evil empires, the Monarch and the Church of The Instrumentality. He is aided in his battles by a motley crew of survivors, a mystic by the name of Syzygy Darklock, a telepath named Willow and a cat-man called Oedi.”
Dreadstar is one Marvel character who did not actually appear in the main 616 Universe , but instead appeared in Marvel’s Epic Illustrated – a creator-owned imprint.
Producing the film will be J.C. Spink of “We’re the Millers” and “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” fame and Ford Lytle Gilmore.
“Apart from Star Wars, this was my favorite science fiction story growing up,” said Spink, surprising this intrepid reporter as they have never even heard of Marvel’s Epic Illuminated let alone Dreadstar.
“Dreadstar is one of the most important comics in the 1980’s, paving the way for creators to control their own creations. After decades of Jim exercising that control and turning away countless Hollywood suitors, I’m excited he’s trusting me and J.C. to do it right.” Said Gilmore.
As of right now, the film has no script and no studio but if this film pans out, we’ll have another film set in space that’s based on Marvel characters.
But be sure to keep it NerdsUnchained for more on this blonde white guy in space.
