Hamas and Fatah Are Getting Back Together

Fatah and Hamas May 4 2011 Hamas and Fatah, governing the Palestinian territories of Gaza and the West Bank, respectively, announced a historic reconciliation deal – 7 years after they broke up in 2007, citing “irreconcilable differences” involving a bloody coup.

“There has been great progress, and we are near ready to sign a deal, at 11AM,” said Mounid Al-Masri, a member of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ delegation in the Gaza Strip said. A similar statement was issued by Hamas spokesperson, Sami Abu Zahawiri.

Despite this “great progress”, however, many Palestinians expressed some concerns about Hamas and Fatah getting back together. Senior Fatah and Hamas officialsAbbas Mohammed, 29, said “I’m happy that Hamas and Fatah are getting back together. Their breakup was difficult to adjust to, but now we have to come up with a good couple name!”

Alia Nassrallah, 25, agreed with Mahmoud. “The next step is to agree on a couple name. Some Palestinian youth have submitted suggestions to Abu Mazen’s office in Ramallah. Famas, Hatah, Fatmas. You see, our options are very limited.”

Abbas Mohammed also added, “Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have “Branjelina”, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have “Bennifer”, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have “TomKat”. So Hamas and Fatah need a nickname that is just as good, if not better.”

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was quoted saying “He [Mahmoud Abbas] has to choose. Does he [Mahmoud Abbas] want peace with Hamas or peace with Israel? You can have one but not the other,” which led to some international media outlets to assume he is very jealous that the former partners getting back together.
